A minimum of 64 civilians died in a security raid targeting the Red Command gang in Rio de Janeiro's northern suburbs - the biggest and most lethal operation in the Brazilian state's past.

Four security agents were among those killed during the police action in the communities of Alemão and Penha, local authorities stated. Over 80 suspects were arrested.

Intense confrontations commenced when about 2,500 law enforcement officers initiated the operation on Tuesday morning. The criminal organization responded with gunfire, igniting obstacles and dropping bombs from drones, officials said.

The International human rights organization expressed being "horrified" by the law enforcement raid, demanding "immediate and thorough inquiries".

Operation Impact

The area of favelas close to the aerial transportation hub is seen as the main base of among the nation's strongest criminal organizations.

State officials said at least 50 of those killed were "indicated by police as suspected of being criminals".

Dozens of people were injured, including civilians caught in the crossfire.

Residents have described the elevated neighborhood - home to about 300,000 residents - to a "combat area" since the raid started.
